Sit Pads / Back Panels and Sweat.....
Hi All.
Today lets talk about the staple of the frameless backpack..... the sit pad / back panel.
Frameless packs are awesome, let start with that. They are easy, travel packable, comfortable and just plain cool looking. I have owned and hiked with many of the big brand framed packs and I really always come back to the simple frameless bag.
The downsides to frameless .... well...... sweat and getting poked in the back with items in the bag. My best solution is the lightweight and useful good old... sit pad. They are cheap, only weighs a couple ounces and adds that extra cushion a frameless needs for comfort and back protection.
All our trailpacks are made with tie-out tabs and a bungee for a sit pad to attach with the inside backpanel. I personally use a Therm-arest Z Seat Sit Pad and it works great.
Here is a link to, you guessed it.... amazon.com and the sit pad I use.

You can use other cheaper ones also.
Nice thing is, on rest breaks, you can easily pull out the pad from the bungees and use it, well.... as a sit pad. No need to sit on the ground with sharp rocks.
But.... how about back sweat. I have to say. Some framed mesh systems do a better job than others, but regardless of any packs I have ever used, I always still sweat on my back. Maybe it's because I live in Arizona, but me and my Therm a Rest sit pad on my 3-1 Trailpack seems to sweat just about the same as me and an Osprey pack.
